Pimientos lágrima, or sweety drop peppers, are small teardrop-shaped peppers with an addictive sweet-sour flavour. Originally grown by the Incas in the Peruvian Amazon, these peppers are served all over the Mediterranean in salads, sauces and flatbreads.

With just a hint of chilli heat, these little red peppers are delicious on pizza, in couscous or baked into focaccia. Add them to a rich tomato sauce or serve them with a selection of Spanish meats and cheese. Their sweet, tangy flavour will cut through the richness of Serrano ham and spicy chorizo.

Sweety drop peppers are also great for adding Spanish flavour to simple tray bakes. Try adding them to a dish of roasted chicken thighs with garlic, thyme and a pinch of saffron. Serve with roast potatoes and crisp white wine for a quick but impressive supper.
